Non-credit Courses

English as an additional language

Classes are offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings for adult students who have been assessed within benchmark levels one to seven. Learners will improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The course provides an opportunity to practice and improve English language communication in relation to work, school, shopping, socializing and settlement.

English and math essentials

The English and math essentials class is for students who want to improve their basic literacy abilities. This class teaches English skills such as: reading, writing, spelling and communication. Students will also receive instruction in mathematics. Topics covered in math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. Learners work on a variety of tasks/assignments in order to complete a portfolio. Upon completion of a portfolio, a student may be eligible to receive a certificate of achievement in literacy and learning awarded by the Department of Adult Learning and Literacy. Students may also then be able to register for high school credit courses.

Math for science prep/math refresher

A math refresher is being offered at the McLeod Adult Learning Centre for students who are enrolled in physics, chemistry, pre-calculus or applied math. Students who have been out of school for a few years—those whose math skills are weak or students who took consumer mathematics in high school—are especially encouraged to attend. Each session will cover a different topic, including: fractions, percentages, exponents, polynomials, using a scientific or graphing calculator, solving equations, using formulas, perimeter, area and volume, scientific notation, trigonometry, law of cosines and sines, word problems, factoring, quadratic equations and the quadratic formula, solving two equations with two unknowns, and radicals.
