Schoolwide Citizenship Initiatives
We are committed to supporting our students in becoming caring and responsible citizens. Our school community will once again be exploring the area of health as the foundation for each grade level’s citizenship initiative. As the official launch to our citizenship projects, the entire school community participated in the Terry Fox run on September 25th. Now, each grade level will explore an initiative that ultimately promotes health for people in different parts of the world, including our very own city. The project will have curricular links to a number of subject areas and will highlight one of the general outcomes in social studies, which is to support our students in demonstrating knowledge and values through active democratic citizenship. In addition to developing an awareness of a particular situation or cause, students will become actively engaged in their initiative.
Citizenship education help students acquire the knowledge, value and skills to actively participate as citizens in the school and community. In addition, research shows that when students are engaged in citizenship activities as youth, they are more likely to become active citizens as adults.
