The awards ceremony recognizes excellence in the areas of academic achievement, school spirit and athletics. An established set of criteria for each area exists. Outstanding achievement recognized by an outside agency can also be recognized (ie. scholarships, national competition winners). The purpose of the ceremony is not to recognize participation in an activity. This can be done in class, in the appropriate group, etc.
Subject Awards
Subject area awards such as Band, Art, French, etc. are to be handed out as part of each student's package along with sports and academic honour awards.
Year End Marks
Academic award winners will be determined on the final cumulative marks in the subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and French.
Certificates of Merit
The Certificate of Merit recognizes special accomplishments or achievement in a subject area, in special programs such as special education or English as an Additional Language, or for commitment in an extra-curricular area. The awards committee will meet in June to hear presentations from people wishing to give recognition awards. The committee would determine if the request should be approved.
Ceremonies
The Grade 9 awards ceremony is held in the evening as part of the Grade 9 Farewell. The elementary and grades 7 and 8 ceremonies are held in the daytime. Parents of major award winners are notified by the Homeroom Teacher and invited to attend the ceremony.
