Cosmetology

This program is designed for those students who wish to become a licensed hairstylist or nail technician.

Hairstyling

Hairstyling students will complete a required 1,400 hours of in-school training and earn 12 credits over a period of three years.

This three-year program is designed to enable the students to obtain the theory and practical knowledge necessary to become a licenced hairstylist.

The students will learn haircutting, perming, hair colouring, basic manicure, basic skin care and other related skills.

Nail Technology

Nail Technology students will complete a required 480 hours of in-school training and earn four credits.

Nail Technology is designed to enable the students to obtain the theory and practical knowledge necessary to become a licensed nail technician.

The students will learn five methods of manicuring, pedicures, toe cures, nail extensions (gel, acrylic, and fiberglass), nail repairs, nail art, and other related skills.

This three-year program is designed to meet the interests and needs of a broad range of students who are considering the health and human services field for future employment.  The courses introduce students to the theory and practice of human relations skills, basics of anatomy and physiology, and the fundamentals of nursing. Through an extensive and intensive work experience component, students put into practice much of the theory discussed.


Health and Child Care

Required Credits for Grade 10

Dimensions of Life, Introduction to Preschool, Child Care Techniques, Introduction to Applied Child Care

The Grade 10 program is a study of human growth and development with emphasis on communication skills, personal awareness and accountability. In Semester 2, the students do a work practicum in elementary school classrooms and community daycares.

Required Credits for Grade 11

Anatomy & Physiology, Health Care, Communication Skills & Health & Safety

Grade 11 students will study anatomy and physiology, introduction to the world of work and interpersonal relationships. The students will also participate in a practical unit related to the general rules of emergency care and the guidelines to help reduce the risk of accidents in the home and the workplace. In Semester 2, practical experience will be gained in health and human services throughout the community.

Required Credits for Grade 12

Basic Nursing Theory, Basic nursing Skills, Applied Family & Community, Applied Health Care & Life Span Development

The Grade 12 program is the facilitation of Red River College’s Health Care Aide Program. In Semester 2, the students do a work practicum in acute care and long term facilities (240 hours) and with home care agencies (20 hours). Upon successful completion, the students will receive the Health Care Aide Certificate from Red River College, which qualifies them to work in many health care areas.

Students may choose to participate in the Grade 12 program for high school credits (dual certification – academic and technology) and not certify as a health care aide.
