High School Apprenticeship Profile
Dylan Hill is a grade 11 student here at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate. Like most students Dylan is looking forward to the upcoming holiday break but not so he can sleep in and stay warm inside, but so he can hit the jobsite. Dylan is a high school apprentice in the trade of Carpentry, which means he's earning hours toward trade certification as a carpenter, earning money and tuition incentives to take further training once he graduates. Since starting his apprenticeship last year Dylan has earned two grade 12 credits and 222 hours towards his future certification as a journeyman carpenter.
Dylan is apprenticing with his father at Sakiyama Construction and spends his evenings, weekends and breaks working on numerous jobsites and projects. When asked if he would continue on with his training after he graduates next year Dylan was focused with his answer "Yes, for sure. I'm getting my red seal. I like the work and seeing a finished product at the end of the day."
