ABORIGINAL STUDENT GROUP
Between 50 and 100 of our students can lay claim to some degree of aboriginal ancestry. Many others may simply be interested in aboriginal culture and its contribution to Canadian society. We will have many opportunities to share our stories and enjoy learning together. There will be a get to know you meeting in the last week of October. Stay tuned to announcements. The group will also participate in the MANITOBA ABORIGINAL CAREER FAIR as well as the national fair later in the year. Interested students should contact Mr. Esselmont. We look forward to sharing good relationships and creating success together.

DRAGON BOAT
The Manitoba Canoe and Kayak Centre on Churchill Drive in Winnipeg hosts a fun filled day of Dragon Boat festivities to kick off the summer for junior and senior high students. Teams from across the province will compete for fun, prizes, and to see who will be the best in the province. School team registration includes 2 90 minute practices or 3 60 minute practices, and a minimum of 2 races, as well as all the instruction and equipment necessary to compete. This event raises funds for KidSport. For more information see Ms. Mamchuk.
EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
Do you want in on an experience of a lifetime? I am not talking about a trip to the principal’s office, though that might be eventful as well. Way better than that. All students enrolled in language courses at REC have the opportunity to participate in a School Exchange Program to either Germany or Mexico. A few aims of the exchange program are for participants to improve their target language and gain a better understanding of a different culture. Participants of the exchange will have the excitement of hosting a student from a different country as well as the thrill of staying with their exchange partner in a different part of the globe. The School Exchange Program thrives on the active participation of the students and if self-motivation, commitment, academic excellence, and dedication to go the extra mile are characteristics that describe you, the exchange is certainly something you’d be interested it.

ISCF ( Faith and Life)
Faith and life are by necessity woven together. One does not have meaning without the other. That is the starting point for students who get together on Thursdays at noon in room 105. There is a lot of excellent sharing, teaching and singing directed entirely by the students. Twenty to thirty students are at each meeting but there is always room for one more. We have also had guest speakers from inner city missions and local churches who have engaged us with their experiences and challenges. Hope to see you soon!
KEY CLUB
The REC Key club is a team of hard working, energetic and dedicated young adults. The focus of their work and efforts is to contribute to the community life through service projects and volunteer activities. Key club is an acronym for Kiwanis Educating Youth. The club meets on a weekly basis to plan and organize activities they plan to pursue. They are often called upon to assist in school projects that require commitment, leadership skills and a willingness to help others in need. They are active in volunteer work with a number of local community agencies such as Winnipeg Harvest, Winnipeg Humane Society, Christmas Cheer Board, Koats for Kids, Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup Program to name a few.
NATURAL HELPERS
We know that students turn to their peers first for help and advice. To have students who are more insightful and skillful in providing such assistance would seem to be a good thing for a student population. That is the premise of Natural Helpers. Students nominated by their peers through a school wide survey are invited to a fall retreat to participate in 2.5 days of training that covers physical and verbal signs of stress, responses that really do help, and when and how to refer problem situations that require a different level of expertise. The retreat is held at the lovely Camp Cedarwood in the Whiteshell in November. Past participants have recalled the training as a highlight of their school years and something which did give them more confidence in how to help effectively. That has to be good for everybody.
SCOPE
Since the 1960’s River East Collegiate has produced a school newspaper as a forum for student writing. Whether it is school events you are interested in or student views on current politics the SCOPE newspaper for nearly 50 years has been the voice of the River East Collegiate student body. The technology by which the newspaper is produced has changed dramatically over the years, but the quality of student writing and off-the-wall humour has persisted.
SKIING - ALPINE (DOWN-HILL)

SKIING NORDIC (CROSS COUNTRY)
When you live in Manitoba, winter can be a season worth celebrating. Nordic skiing is an excellent way to get some fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors. The REC Nordic Ski Club meets Wednesday evenings, weather permitting, on the groomed trails of the Windsor Park Nordic Centre. We have something for everyone. No experience is necessary and novices are always welcome. If you are an experienced skier you can test your skills and endurance by zipping down the banks of the beautiful Siene River. You may even want to enter the school or provincial races!

YEARBOOK
Students are always welcome to help us create the yearbook!
We have students that drop in casually, to share photos, art, or writing. There is also an opportunity to earn a credit, for those students willing to make a time commitment to the program.
